Considering Chiropractic Care After Your Car Accident

It always happens unexpectedly.  You’re driving down the freeway, passing through a busy intersection, or slowing down at a stop sign.  Suddenly, there’s a roaring smash, the sound of metal barreling and crashing into metal.  Simultaneously, an instant jerk forward, a rush of pain as your body pushes forcefully against your seat belt.  Then, as quickly as it began, the experience is over. Car accidents happen in the blink of an eye.  It only takes one person not paying attention for an unanticipated rush of devastation.

The effects of a car accident can last for weeks, months, and even years afterward.  Depending on the severity, there is a range of both injuries and property damage that can result, from a minor fender bender to a serious rollover accident.  Any accident is destructive.  It complicates your life in unexpected ways.  An accident can be a severe inconvenience.  The accident can require lengthy phone calls with the insurance company, missed work, and the time to heal from injuries.

Someone who has been involved in a serious accident can be benefited by chiropractic care. Car accidents frequently result in a common variety of injuries.  For example, more typical car accident injuries often involve back and neck injuries.  These injuries result from the stress placed on the neck and spine from the jolting motions of the body being pressed against the seat belt or the thrust of the victim’s back being slammed against the seat of the vehicle.

Chiropractic care can be a helpful treatment for relieving back and neck pain.  Chiropractors will often use spinal adjustment to improve symptoms of strain.  The overall goal of chiropractic treatment is to increase overall function and movement in the joint and relax injured muscles.  Studies have demonstrated that chiropractic care can be a safe and effective treatment for back pain, as well as neck pain.  Some chiropractors have additional certification in physical rehabilitation, exercise, and massage therapy.

Chiropractic care can also be a less costly form of treatment.  Following an accident, many victims struggle with financial burdens. These burdens often stem from property damage, lost wages, and medical treatment.  Studies have shown that chiropractic care can cut health care costs.  This less expensive form of treatment can be a great alternative to other expensive treatments with similar levels of satisfaction.

If you’ve been injured in an accident and are considering treatment options, chiropractic care should always be on your list.  It can effectively treat many of the typical injuries following an injury.  Similarly, chiropractic treatment is a less expensive form of treatment.

Keep Your Kids Healthy When Going Back to School.

Yesterday as I was going to the store I saw aisles lined with pencils, paper, rulers, and erasers. Yup, it’s that time of year again, time for back to school! As you are getting your children new school supplies for the new school year it is also important to get your child’s health ready for the new school year too.  Did you know that a major cause of child back pain and poor posture is due to a badly made & worn backpack, as well as carrying too much weight in their backpack? It is recommended that children carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight in their backpack (so if your child weights 80 pounds, they should carry around only 8 pounds in their backpack).

Here are some things to look for when purchasing a backpack for your child (taken from True Health Family Chiropractic)

  • Two wide shoulder straps (that are worn on both shoulders, none of this wearing on one shoulder business)
  • A padded back.
  • A waist belt (worn across the waist)
  • Multiple compartments.
  • Have contents evenly distributed (make good use of those compartments).

It is also important to make sure your children have proper shoes for school. Fads will come and go, but its not worth it to have back, knee, and hip pain in order to stay on trend. Make sure you buy shoes that properly fit (if possible buy a shoe that your child can grow into as the year goes on).  A poorly supported shoe can cause more than just your foot to go out of alignment, it can make you shift your body weight (in order to compensate for a poorly supported shoe) putting extra pressure on your knees, hips, and low back.

And of course, make sure your child is up-to-date with their adjustments. Having a properly aligned spine can not only help your child feel great, but it will help boost their immunity, improve nerve function, keep their body balanced and functioning properly. Especially for kids during a growth spurt, and adjustment can help keep their bodies functioning at their best, allowing them to concentrate on their schooling.
